GLS63: Include the Rear Parking Brake
This Mercedes-AMG GLS63 uses a 440mm front and 410mm rear STOPFLEX long-fiber carbon ceramic setup. The wheel-off photographs show the large front assembly and, at the rear, a main caliper alongside a separate parking-brake unit.
- Front: Akebono 10-piston calipers with STOPFLEX 440mm long-fiber carbon ceramic rotors.
- Rear: Brembo 4-piston calipers with EPB and STOPFLEX 410mm long-fiber carbon ceramic rotors.
The long-fiber material is worth discussing if the intended use includes repeated high-load braking. STOPFLEX describes continuous carbon strands as carrying load through the rotor for higher strength and thermal durability within its range. That is the relevant material advantage to evaluate alongside this GLS63's large front and rear hardware.
Higher thermal duty brings supporting requirements. STOPFLEX still recommends cooling and suitable high-temperature fluid for sustained hard use because pads, seals, fluid and calipers absorb heat. Street, Track-Day and Motorsport versions serve different operating conditions; the most demanding grade should follow the use case, not simply the largest diameter.
The rear assembly adds another practical detail: the Brembo 4-piston service caliper sits alongside separate parking-brake hardware. For a comparable road-car conversion, include that EPB unit and its mounting in the package discussion from the start, together with the rear rotor and main caliper.
